History of Department

Jai Hind College started the B.Com (Banking and Insurance) degree in the academic year 2003-2004. Mumbai University has designed this course keeping in mind students with an aptitude and inclination for careers in banking and insurance. Over the years, Jai Hind College BBI has been one of the most sought after degrees offered by the college and the college has successfully maintained its ranking as one of the top three colleges offering BBI in Mumbai.

Information about the department:
The BBI department at Jai Hind College has always had cent percent results of which more than 95% got distinction and the rest got first class. In addition to this, the department has also given the College University toppers and merit rank holders in ALL the years since its inception.

BBI is a full-time degree course spread over 3 years, with each year being divided into 2 semesters. The course covers 38 subjects and 2 projects on banking and insurance of 100 marks each, which are to be submitted in the final year. The class strength of 60 is optimal, since it allows for better student-teacher interaction and participation. The course is very professionally and effectively conducted, with highly qualified academics and professionals from the industry conducting the classes.

The teaching methodology includes classroom discussions and debates, role play, case studies and paper presentations, in addition to the conventional chalk-and-talk method. While the course is primarily theoretical, there is a good blend of projects, case studies, moot courts, court visits and industrial visits to enable a student to get hands on experience in the functioning of the Industry. The department also conducts various seminars and workshops to make them well – versed in global Banking and Insurance markets.

Activities:
BBI is an extremely vibrant department that believes in providing holistic education and regularly conducts events and organises activities to achieve this goal.

BBI realises the importance of interaction between the juniors and seniors and organises industrial visits and field trips in each semester. This gives the students a chance to bond and also gives them a chance to discover solutions to real world situations.

“Entourage”, an inter-collegiate festival was started by JHC BBI department in the year 2009. This festival is organized by students from all three years and provides them with a platform to unleash their creative and organizational skills. The festival has gone from strength to strength over the years such that almost all Mumbai colleges and now even colleges from Delhi and Bangalore not only participate in it but look forward to Jai Hind College hosting this festival. The festival encompasses not only sports, educational and cultural events but lays great emphasis on social responsibility. The festival is marked by the attendance of academicians, industrialist and celebrities as speakers and/or judges of the various events. The festival helps in the holistic development of the students.

Jai Hind College also prides itself on providing excellent opportunities for internships and placements. Students get placed in renowned national and international banks, insurance companies and financial institutions. The department organises many guest lectures, where industry experts and corporate heads interact with students on syllabus related subjects and topics of general interest.

In addition to the above activities, the department arranges an orientation for the parents and students of the first year, a graduation ceremony for the third year and regular parent teacher meets for defaulters and weak students of all the three years to keep parents abreast of the performance of their ward.
