History and Research carried out by the Department

Department of Environmental Studies came into existence along with commerce faculty in 1980. Earlier this paper was known as Commercial Geography. Later it changed as Environmental Studies. This subject covers various environment related issues and concerns.

Department is actively involved in research activities.

Mr. Udhav Zarekar is Head of Department of EVS department. He has completed the Minor research project (Sanction by University of Mumbai) in the year 2011-12 on the topic “changing occupation of Tribes in Maharashtra”. He is actively involved in research activities, attending seminars, workshops and also pursuing the doctoral degree.

Environmental studies- SEM I

UNIT I : ENVIRONMENT AND ECOSYSTEM

Environment-definition, nature, scope, component, typology, Ecology : definition and types; importance of environmental studies and emerging issues of development with special reference to India.

UNIT II : RENEWABLE AND NON-RENEWABLE RESOURCES

Natural resources, definition, importance, classification, distribution patterns, conservation of water, forest, energy resources; Energy crises and its impact; Management and mitigation

UNIT III : POPULATION AND THE ENVIRONMENT

Population, distribution pattern; Environment and human health; Population growth in India: Measures taken to control population growth; carrying capacity and its relevance; Human development- Index patterns of HDI in India.

UNIT IV : FOOD RESOURCES AND ENVIRONMENT

Food and Environment, sources, areas of food in the world and pattern of food trade; World food problem, changes in productivity due to overgrazing and use of chemical fertilizers-pesticides; and food security and hunger.

Environmental studies- SEM II

UNIT I : ENVIRONMENT AND MAN’S ACTIVITIES

Secondary and Tertiary activities- role of Transport and telecommunication technology over time and space. Factors of transport – Complementarity – Transferabilty – Intervening opportunities. World industries- locational pattern and environmental problems. New Industrial policy.

UNIT II : ENVIRONMENT AND TOURISM

Tourism as an emerging service – Factors of location, factors of development, typology, and challenges before India. New tourism policy- Accessible Tourism, consequences of tourism.

UNIT III : ENVIRONMENTAL MOVEMENTS AND MANAGEMENTS

Environmental protection. Environmental movements in India – green business and green consumption. Constitutional provisions. Environmental management – concept, need and relevance. Environmental impact assessment. Concept of ISO 14000 and 16000. Carbon bank and carbon credit.

UNIT IV : WASTE MANAGEMENT

Waste – types, Problems of non-degradable waste, Solid waste, E-waste and Plastic waste, waste management, Recycling of Waste- Eco-friendly lifestyle.
