Profile:
|
|
Life Sciences is an INTERDISCIPLINARY subject
that uses the principles of CHEMISTRY, PHYSICS, and MATHEMATICS,
to help answer some important questions in BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES.
The department has teachers having varying specializations
to meet the demands of the wide-ranging topics.
It's chief aim is to provide a HOLISTIC OVERVIEW of the entire
scientific discipline, without any RESTRICTION, to enable
the student to face the challenges the world has in store
with SKILL, EASE & OVERWHELMING CONFIDENCE.
A Life Science Graduate is better equipped to appear & successfully
clear entrance exams for getting admission to a M.Sc. Course
or for any competitive exams like the U.G.C. C.S.I.R. or even
the NET/SET, which are now mandatory for all lecturers.
Our department is one of the youngest in the college, and
yet in a short time it has managed to carve a niche for itself
not only within the portals of the college but has also become
a force to recon with among all the colleges in Mumbai which
offer the subject.
A graduate in Life Sciences can obtain a Masters in Life Science
with specialization in:
BIOTECHNOLOGY, NEUROBIOLOGY, APPLIED MEDICINE, REPRODUCTIVE
BIOTECHNOLOGY, GENETIC ENGINEERING, ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE,
- ENVIRONMENTAL CHEMISTRY, BIOANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY & MACROMOLECULAR
BIOLOGY to name a few.
Besides this a student can also pursue other diploma courses
like D.M.L.T., Clinical Trials, Immunology, Hospital management
nutrition & dietetics or pursue M.Sc. By research

| Academic
Excellence :
|
|
Time and again the department has had excellent
results and our students dome us proud.
Almost 95% of them obtain a first class.
We are proud of our students who have fared amazingly well
in various fields are their graduation They pursue fields
as diverse as: Genetic Medicine at Sheffield Univ.M.Sc. in
the field of Immunology at a university in Australia; M.Sc.
/ M. Tech in Biotechnology at Bangalore at the T. John College;
A Diploma course in Wild Life Management; M.Sc. In Life Sciences
- Biotechnology at the Kalina campus; P.G. Course in Forensic
Science & Law
All this in addition to the regular P.G. Courses.
To ensure that the students reach out beyond the barriers
of the syllabus and that of mundane class room teaching to
get a holistic knowledge of the subject the department included
in its activities, seminars, talks and workshops, where luminaries
from different fields of specialization share their expertise
with our students.
Renowned Homeopath Dr. Zubin P. Marolia, an ex - student of
Jai Hind College, delivered the talk on Stress, Lifestyles
and Homeopathy. Dr. Ashish Mehta - Hon. Con.- Spinal
& Neurosurgeon, Breach Candy Hospital & Research Centre enlightened
the students on various aspects of Neurobiology While Ms.
Riva Pocha - M.S. Forensic Science Course Coordinator
- St. Xavier's College; gave then a deep insight on the various
aspects of Forensic Science.
A seminar cum workshop entitled: "Infertility Conquerable?"
was organized in association with Melbourne - IVF - Mumbai,
where Dr. Duru Shah, Alumni Jai Hind College, President
- FOGSI; and Director Melbourne IVF - Mumbai was the Plenary
speaker. Dr. Rupin Shah (Male infertility specialist)
and Dr. Roma Lala (A USG specialist - also an ex -Jaihindite)
enlighted the students in their areas of specialization. Dr.
K.M. Avari. Embryologist and leading IVF specialist
demonstrated various techniques of Assisted Reproduction.
As part of the teaching plan students visit various parts
of our country which expose them to the rich flora and fauna
of our country.
They have visited the Lakshadweep Islands, Karavatti and Kalpeni.
Jim Corbett national park, Dudhsagar Waterfalls, Bhagwan Mahavir
Wild - life Sanctuary & Bondla Wildlife Sanctuary to name
a few.
Additionally they visit institutes of National fame like the
CDRI - Lucknow and The Govind Vallhab Pant Institute at Ranikhet,
Asia's only Naval aircraft Museum, National center for Antarctic
Ocean research, National institute of Oceanography, Goa Science
Centre, Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary.
Audiovisual presentations and animations are common tools
used by all the members of the department to make the process
of teaching and learning a pleasant one.
During the last two academic years the members of the department
have attended several meetings at Sophia College and St. Xavier's
College for the revision of the F.Y. B.Sc.
syllabus. We also attended a meeting for the revision of the
M.Sc. syllabus in the subject of Life Sciences at the Department
of Life Sciences in Kalina.
Dr. (Mrs.) Yasmina Dordi Avari also acts as a resource person
at most of these meets She acts as examiner and moderator
in the subject at the graduate level She acts as examiner
and moderator in the subjects of Life Sciences, Biotechnology
and Biophysics at the postgraduate level.
Ms. Niloufer Kotwal has also presently been appointed as an
examiner at the graduate level. She is also an ad - hoc appointee
for postgraduate teaching.
Faculty members have attended a National level symposium in
Life Sciences organised by the Department at the Kalina Campus,
International Symposium on Preventive and Diagnostic Medicine
in Molecular Biology organised by Reliance Life Sciences.
Workshop on Use of Biostatistics in Biological sciences, organised
by the Mithibai College

Practices
|
|
Following in the tradition of our department,
every year, the faculty meets shortly after the college closes
for the summer to decide some strategies for the coming academic
year.
As the dept. is rather young this gives us all ample time
to be well armed for the forthcoming year. All the members
of the department meet to plan out methodologies to ease the
difficulties students face during their examinations - especially
practicals.
The Department holds a Parent - Teacher meeting for the students
of the T.Y. Class. The meeting is aimed at appraising the
parents of the performance of their children/wards so as to
ensure adequate care is also taken at home so that the students
can double their efforts to compete with their fellow colleagues,
and face future challenges.
Students are guided to help them overcome their fears and
their special areas of interest are looked into so as to help
them to develop confidence to forge ahead in their chosen
field in search of excellence.
