Departmental Profile

The Department of History at Jai Hind College is as old as the Arts Faculty. It caters to students who offer the subject at the Undergraduate and Graduate levels. At senior college History is taught at the First year and Second Year levels. At the Third Year Level the subject is offered as a Part Major along with other combinations. The College is working towards applying for Full Major. The Faculty believes in developing an interest in the subject through development of an analytical approach in the students. Emphasis is laid on Study of Historiography and Research Methodology. The Faculty uses traditional as well as innovative methods to make the subject matter interesting for the students. The methodology used varies from Lecture Method using audio-visual aids, to forming Buzz Groups. In order to encourage students to read widely, to collect and access disparate material, organize it rationally and arrange it in a coherent and persuasive manner discussions & debates are organized and so are presentations by students. The Department launched the History Association in 1999 and undertakes various activities through this forum. Over the past few years the Association has been involved in organizing lectures conferences workshops and seminars. The History Association has evolved an innovative system of ensuring student participation in activities by issuing achievement cards to the students. This helps the Department to identify outstanding students and give them due credit for their efforts. The History Department also believes in an inter-disciplinary approach. The Department proposes to embark on an ambitious project that of developing the Jai Hind College Archives. The Department has developed a Module for the Study of International Relations catering to the needs of the BMS students in order to make them aware about Contemporary Issues. The Faculty of the History Department also handles the teaching of Foundation Course Paper I and Paper II in all three faculties - Arts, Science and Commerce. The Department also teaches the Applied Component Paper on Travel and Tourism. The Department boasts of an excellent Faculty, which is highly experienced and open to changes in keeping with the changing world scenario.

Academic Excellence

The History Department believes that the Teaching learning experience becomes more fruitful when there is active participation of students in the process. The Department believes in encouraging the study of Historiography and development of Research skills among the Teachers and the Students associated with it. Members of the Department attend and participate in workshops and Seminars organised by the Mumbai University and Other colleges in the city. Students are also encouraged to attend and participate in Seminars and Inter- Collegiate activities organised by the History Departments of Other Colleges.

Principal Dr. (Mrs.) Kirti Narain
Dr. Narain has presented the following papers in the past on various occasions:

In October 2005 at Kyoto Japan she presented a paper titled Empires and Networks - Indian Families in Hong Kong : Professional and Occupational Contribution in Japan.

In November 2005 at JFK University, San Francisco, USA she presented a paper titled Indian Immigrants in Hong Kong -Co-prosperity and Cross-cultural dynamics.

In October 2004 at the Centre of Asian Studies at the University of Hongkong she presented a paper titled Education of the Girl Child: China and India

Dr. Kirti Narain presented the paper on 'The Leaders of the Revolt - Motivation and Action' at the National seminar organized by Jai Hind College in January 2007 on The Revolt of 1857

Faculty Participation

Mrs. Mohini C. Dias [Head of the Department]

Mrs. M.C. Dias is the Chairperson of the Board of Studies in History at The Mumbai University.

She also handles the responsibility of being the treasurer of Bombay History Teachers Academy. Mrs. M.C. Dias did a three-month teaching programme as part of the Faculty exchange programme at Union College Schenectady New York. Mrs.

Mohini Dias attended a National Seminar on Church History in October 2005 at Goa. She also attended the National level seminar on 'REASON AND RELIGION IN AKBAR'S INDIA.' She was also the convener of the National Seminar on 1857 organised by the History Department.

Among her many administrative duties she is the convener of the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC)

Mrs. Nandini Pradhan

She is a member of the Attendance Committee at the Senior College Level. Mrs. Pradhan is also the of treasurer of the History Associaton. She organized and accompanied the students on the study trip to Lothal and is responsible for organizing the annual trip to Pune for the study of Musueology.

Mrs. Safina Khan

Mrs. Safina Khan specializes in teaching of Human Rights due to her expertise in the area. Mrs. Khan has attended A National Seminar on 'Women in situations of Conflict' at K.C. College in March 2005.She also attended the National level seminar on 'REASON AND RELIGION IN AKBAR'S INDIA.' in 2006. Since she teaches Foundation Course Paper I and II she was invited to provide her inputs for reframing the syllabus. Besides Academic activities Mrs. Khan is an ex-officio member of the Women's Cell of the College

Achievements of the Department

The students are encouraged to participate in inter-collegiate seminars and workshops.

Ms. Vinita Abhichandani won the Paper Presentation Competition organized by Jhunjhunwala College where she presented a paper on the topic: Women in History.The College sent Ms. Sonam Arora to the Heras Institute and she presented a project on the topic: Portugal as a Maritime Nation'

Students attended a Self Study Conference on "Relevance of Political Legacy of Mahatma Gandhi for Modern University Youth". It was a Three Phase Programme organised by CHM College on 19th November 2005 at the University Club House.

The Travel and Tourism students are taken to Travel agencies and academy's to learn about the career options in the field.

The History Department organised a NATIONAL LEVEL SEMINAR ON:

1857 REVISITED - A TIMELESS JOURNEY MYTHS AND REALITIES on the 24TH AND 25TH JANUARY 2007

Scholars and Historians from University of Mumbai, University of Delhi, Kurukshetra University and Jamia Milia Islamia University graced the Seminar. The sessions dealt with various aspects of 1857 such as Literature, Press, Religion, Society, Leaders, etc. The Seminar also included panel discussions, questions and answers sessions and an Urdu play with 1857 as the background.
