Department Of History
The Department of History was introduced when Jai Hind College was established in 1948. In the Third Year, History is offered as a Part Major. The Faculty of the Department also handles the teaching of Foundation Course in all three faculties - Arts, Science and Commerce as well as the Applied Component Paper on Travel and Tourism. The department launched the History Association in 1999 and undertakes various activities through this forum. A module for the study of international relations has been developed that caters to the needs of the BMS students in order to make them aware about Contemporary Issues.

Student Achievements :

In 2008-09, out of 23 students who appeared for the TY examination, 10 secured a First Class and 13 a Second Class. Komal Lakhani and Heena Pardasani have been selected under the Ontario-Maharashtra-Goa (OMG) student exchange programme to study in Canada. Two students, Abhay and Aldish of SY, have won laurels at the research programme at the Heras Institute of St Xaviers College.

 
Staff Achievements :
• Dr. Kirti Narain, the Principal, has presented about 40 papers in the past and published them at national and international levels, the latest being ‘Educating your daughter is like watering the neighbour’s lawn’—A Comparative Study of China and India, published as an Occasional Paper under the China-India Project undertaken by the Centre of Asian Studies, University of Hong Kong. She has written 4 books, the latest being an edited book with MC Dias, Head of Department of History, 1857 Revisited: Myth and Reality (2008).

• Ms MC Dias holds the distinction of being appointed as Chairperson of the Board of Studies for History. She was the Convenor of the national seminar commemorating 150 years of the Revolt of 1857, in January 2007. She has also contributed an article in the Jai Hind College TAF journal, Different Strokes. Presently, she holds the position of the Vice Principal, Faculty of Arts.

• The latest academic activity was the organization of an interdisciplinary national seminar, India on the Move, Different Faces of Brand India: Last two Decades of Transition in 2009. This was inaugurated by the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Shri Ashok Chavan.

• Ms Hawabibi Choonawala has been selected for the International Leaders in Education Programme (ILEP) to be held at Kentucky University, USA, for a period of five months from January to May, 2009. This programme is sponsored by Internal Research and Exchange Board (IREX), a government endeavour.
