The Chemistry department of Jai Hind College is one of the largest departments in the Science faculty. Besides offering graduation in Chemistry in 6 units, it is also one of the few departments in the college which offers post graduation courses (MSc by papers) in the following branches: inorganic, organic and physical. The department offers 'Drugs and Dyes' as the Applied Component option in the undergraduate level. The department has also recently applied for post graduation by research in the inorganic and analytical branches and is hopeful of extending it to the other branches as well in the near future.

The department has its own fair share of publications.

To mention a few, a book has been written on Industrial and Analytical chemistry for the second year students of chemistry.
In addition, two papers were presented; one on 'Liquid Membrane Transport' at the 23rd convention of the Indian Council of Chemists and the other on 'Environmental Laws', while a poster was presented at the Mumbai University, Marathi Bhasha Bhavan.
Several research papers in leading journals have also been published, prominent amongst them being Indian Journal of Heterocyclic Chemistry, Asian Journal of Chemistry and the Society of Free Radical Research.

Several faculty members are actively involved in research, both fundamental as well as interdisciplinary. Two minor research projects, funded by Mumbai University have been successfully completed: one on 'Optical Spectra of Coloured Ions and Effect of NO (donors) constituent compounds' and the other on 'Removal of Urea from Wastewater through BLM'. Research is also being carried out on the synthesis of some biologically active heterocyclic compounds. The chief interdisciplinary research projects under way are 'Bioremediation and Beautification of Thane lakes' with the Microbiology department and 'Noise pollution - A case study of Greater Mumbai' with the Botany department. Two of the staff members are at present, engaged in doctoral research.

The department houses its own library under the aegis of the Chemical Society which caters to both the undergraduate and postgraduate requirements.

The department through the Chemical Society has always encouraged excellence in academics through the sponsorship of meritorious students at different levels by way of the Taru Lalvani Fellowship. It has also endeavoured in getting placements for its students in pharmaceutical concerns, especially at the postgraduate level.
