Departmental Profile
 

Department of Botany is one of the oldest departments of Jai-Hind college. All faculty members are Doctorates. In the year 1970, the first faculty member of Jai-Hind college to be awarded the Ph.D degree was from Botany department. All members have been actively participating in a number of National Conferences, Seminars and Workshops held at various places in the country. Botany department has also been organizing various activities for the benefit of students through "Roots n genes"(Biological Society).These activities include organizing Annual Exhibitions (Projects and Poster display); Nature study trips to various locations, arranging short term courses in Landscaping, Floral arrangements, Bonsai, Bottle gardening and Mushroom cultivation.in the laboratory.

  • Papers Published by faculty members in last 5 years:

Dr. Suhasini Sasikumar published 2 Research papers on "Trigonella foenum-graecum Linn"in the National Scientific Journal- "Nature Conservators" 2004. She also published and presented a paper on "Studies on the vertical distribution of airspora at some of the residential areas in the "Western suburbs of Mumbai"; presented at 14th National Conference on Aerobiology at Raipur, from 15th to 17th Jan'2007.

Dr. Bharati Tamhane along with 2 Co-authors published a paper titled "Spirulina-Non-conventional food" in Financing Agriculture-An inhouse Journal of Agricultural Finance Corporation Ltd.in July-Sept 2005 and presented the same at a conference held at Bangalore.

Dr.A.N.Joshi presented a paper on "Urban environ-A case study of Powai lake" at National Conference on "Management of Urban vegetation" in Sept'2005 organised by Wilson college on 23-24 Sept'2005.


Dr. K.D. Chawla published paper entitled "Effect of Allelopathic substances on Biodiversity of Ferns" in National Conference on Biodiversity conservation held by Dept. of Botany, MLV. Govt. college, Bhimara on 21st and 22nd Sept.2006.

  • Research and Consultancy:
Dr.S.Sasikumar has guided 4 students for Ph.D.degree from 2002-2007
Dr.Tamhane and Dr.Joshi have also recently enrolled students for Ph.D. degree.
 
  • Projects undertaken

Dr.S. Sasikumar functioned as a Co-investigator for 2 major National Research projects funded by Ministry of Environment and Forestry; New Delhi and MMRDA Environment improvement society in 2002.

Dr. Bharati Tamhane successfully completed a project on "Organic Spirulina" financed by University of Mumbai under the grants for minor research projects in 2005.

Dr. A.N.Joshi has been sanctioned a UGC project on "Noise mapping of Greater Mumbai in March 2007.

  1. National Conference on "Fungal Diversity & Biotechnology" in Feb'2002 at Pendharkar college, Dombivili. (Dr. Sasikumar & Dr.Joshi).

  2. National Conference on "Management of Urban vegetation" in Sept'2005 organised by Wilson college on 23-24 Sept'2005. (All faculty members).

  3. National Seminar on "Emerging Trends in Plant Metabolomics" at R.J.College, Mumbai in Nov'2006.(Dr.Tamhane & Dr. Joshi).

Dr S.Sasikumar was appointed as an "External Referee" to assess Ph.D. thesis of a student from Barkhtulla University, Bhopal and for Viva-voce for a Ph.D.student from Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University, Aurangabad. She has also worked as a Chairperson for M.Sc. Part I and M.Sc. Part II Examinations during 2002-2005. She has also been a Subject Expert for selecting teachers for their Selection Grade at CHM College, K.C. College and R.Ruia College.

Dr.B.M.Tamhane was a member of local inquiry committee and visited NEERI (worli) and S.I.E.S. college Sion for recognition of Post-graduate courses.she is presently appointed as an examiner for M.Sc. Part I Botany Examination.

Dr. A.N.Joshi is presently a Co-opted member of Board of Studies of Botany. She is also presently an examiner for M.Sc. Part II Botany Examination.

Dr. S.A.Godbole is presently an examiner for B.Sc. Horticulture and Gardening examination.
