DEPT OF MASS MEDIA
HISTORY OF DEPT
University
of Mumbai introduced the 'Bachelor of Mass Media' (BMM)
course in the year 2000. However, Jai Hind College started
the course in 2002. Despite starting the course late, the
response of students for the Selection Examination was good.
About 600 students appeared for the examination and 60 were
selected after a round of interview. In June 2002, the course
was inaugurated and since then Department of Mass Media
in Jai Hind College has emerged as a vibrant, dynamic and
ever enthusiastic department. It was headed by Mrs. Mohini
Dias, who was the Coordinator of the department and Mr.
Omkar Patki who was the full-time lecturer and Assistant
Coordinator. The department follows the Semester System
as put forth by the University of Mumbai. It conducts lectures
based on the syllabi of the University and other allied
activities as prescribed and guided by the University of
Mumbai. Odd semesters (1, 3 and 5) begin in June and are
concluded in October and even (2, 4 and 6) semesters start
in November and are concluded in March.
The year 2007, Dr. S Varalakshmi took over as the coordinator
of the BMM department. Mrs. Akila Bharat, the Assistant
Coordinator, joined Jai Hind BMM in the year 2008. It was
under their guidance, that Jai Hind’s first exclusive BMM
festival - DETOUR was organized.
At Jai Hind, we believe in a blend of both, theoretical
and practical education. Internal Assessment in the form
of projects and assignments is an integral part of the BMM
programme. As part of this activity, the students are given
the projects with an industry interface and an attempt is
made to give them maximum exposure to the media industry.
Some of these assignments include Making documentaries on
the various sub-cultures in Mumbai, Tracing the life history
of a Brand through its advertising campaigns over the period
of time, Investigating unusual human interest stories outside
Mumbai and so on and so forth. An emphasis is put on developing
communication skills along with professional standards and
ethics.

HIGHLIGHTS
OF BMM
The
Department believes in overall development of students. It,
therefore, encourages their participation in many extra-curricular
activities apart from studies. The students take part in several
intercollegiate festivals like Malhar (organized by St. Xavier's
College), Polaris (organized by Wilson College), Blitzkrieg
(organized by K.C. College), Cutting Chai (organised by R.D
National College) and Frames (organized by S.I.E.S. College).
The participation of the department at these festivals has
been hailed as excellent.
Apart
from the theoretical inputs in the classroom, the students
are exposed to the diverse and fascinating aspects of our
country along with the actual working of media organizations.
Many Industrial Visits have been conducted so far as a part
of this overall development agenda. Students were annually
taken to various places in India : 2004-05 to Hyderabad (
Ramoji Film City), 2005-06 to Delhi and Rishikesh (IGNOU and
BAG Films), 2006-07 to Kerala (Malayala Manorama), 2007-08
to Jaipur (Rajisthan Patrika), 2008-09 Agra, Dalhousie and
Delhi (CNN IBN) and in the year 2009-2010 to Pondicherry and
Chennai (SUN DTH, The Hindu, NDTV-Hindu).
BMM
students had participated in several seminars and college
programmes like the '14th International Economic Convention
where they presented a paper on ‘Healthcare: the lessons India
can learn from the rest of the World'. They have also participated
in the Global Millennium Development Goals Summit (2008) and
the Jai Hind College Interdisciplinary seminar: (India on
the move: the different faces of brand India)
While
doing all this, the department has not forgotten the role
that media plays as the Fourth Estate and as a part of that,
we had organized the screening of the film " Tibet: Cry of
the Snow Lion", a film which was not screened by the authorities
at the Asian Film Festival under the pressure from the Chinese
government.
